Christmas No. 1

As some of you may well know by now, the US heavy metal band Rage against the machine"s Killing in the name finally won the highly publicised race to the Christmas No 1 spot in the UK pop charts. Could this be a turning point in musical tastes reminiscent of punk in the 70"s or a one off protest against   pop thrust upon the public by ITV"s X factor every Christmas ? It"s maybe too early to answer that question but the band RATM promised to donate some of their royalties to a charity which helps underprivileged young people enter the music business as well as to "Shelter" the UK homeless charity.
It may not change the music industry unless it encourages original new bands to trouble the UK charts like in the late 70"s. In any case RATM and JoeMcElderry"s songs are both signed to Sony, the record label Simon Cowel works for. Even so, Mr Cowel is said to be gracious in defeat and contacted the couple responsible for the Facebook campaign to offer his congratulations. He also thanked them for what is being touted as the biggest No 1 race in UK chart history.
